What an incredible hidden spot to visit for a nature fix! Luckily my best friend is from the area so he took me here for a morning hike.
You would never guess this place existed where it is located but if you are looking at this review I would highly recommend going. Here is why:
1. There is a massive observation area where you can spot wildlife and get a Birds Eye view of the Scrub.
2. The trails are beautiful and the area is well maintained. It gives you a feel for what the landscape looked like before people.
3. Accessible! It’s free! Just make sure you close the gate when you enter.
I uploaded a trail map in my photos. Recommend spending an hour here and enjoying the sights!
Interesting place to visit. Nature preserve in the middle of a residential area.
this park is all you could expect from a Natural Scrub area ...and some interesting educational features. Covered elevated platforms are available to oversee the area with an opportunity for exercise walking the stairways. A statue of the Barefoot Mailman stands tall with dedication and info plaques. Along pathways signs display animals, plants of interest that u may encounter while traversing the pathways. the pathways are concrete and adequately wide to walk side by side with friends. Limited , but adequate parking is free ! Each of my visits have been nearly private as it is hot and little shade areas....however, near the entrance an area includes a large concrete picnic table and some modern durable benches to sit. I have included some photos to illustrate my narrative.
Just a couple of minutes of Rt 95 and you feel like you are in the backwoods of old Florida. When you pull into this park you know it’s different. Parking spots are in a few areas mostly around the main circle just inside the park entrance. I’m sure it’s often hard to find a spot on weekends. They even have a bus parking space so maybe there are school groups that go there.
You are greeted with a large wooden observation structure with a tower at each end and a walkway attaching the two together with a large area with benches. The ramps to the lower observation area are wheelchair accessible. The park does not have any bathroom facilities which is surprising with how well designed everything else is.
The entrance gate is designed to keep the gopher tortoise inside and protected. As it’s a wildlife natural area dogs and bikes are not allowed. Once inside the gate there is a concrete path that is wheelchair accessible and takes you on a large loop path that feels about half a mile long. For longer more adventurous walks take the yellow path that leads to near the southern end of the park. It’s mostly a sand path and well marked.
I only gave it 4 stars because of the lack of any bathroom and the limited parking. Without those two points it’s an easy 5 star park. We walked exactly 2 miles. Pull in and check it out. If you have ten minutes or two hours you will enjoy this park.
Very nice place to go stop by and have a visit. It exceeded my expectations since I've seen it get built and I had not actually visited.
A really nice, & adventurous walking trail with plenty of up close wildlife!
We saw a large Gopher Tortoise, tons of varying lizards, & a DINOSAUR sized Iguana!! 3 feet tall! Yikes! The towers are cool, but folks left garbage on them, though trash cans are at the bottom of towers. Cool statue of the Barefoot Mailman. (I say that Iguana ate him!!)
Nice park for walking and exploring the natural scrub area. It is very easy to access. There are no restrooms, and the parking lot is small, but park is very well maintained. There is even a large tower that over looks the area. Only reason for the 3 star rating is due to some sketchy individuals walking around. We were in a larger group, so we felt secure, but I would not go by myself to this location which is a shame because it is fun to explore.
This is a beautiful short stroll whether you go up the looking towers or go through the fence and walk the path. It’s pleasant to escape the city and get some sun and fresh air away from the cars.
